Congratulations to APA!’s president, Dr. Ellen Jefferson, for being named a finalist in the 2009 Austin Under 40 Awards. From their website, “Finalists were selected on the basis of excellence in their professional field and commitment to the Austin community.” We volunteers at APA! think that the AU40 committee made a great decision in choosing Dr. Jefferson as a finalist and are very proud to be volunteering for an organization with her at the helm.

This week we finally worked on leash walking…which I was looking forward to as I don’t like being dragged around by the dogs at adoption sites. The basic concept is to allow a loose leash and to change direction whenever the dog starts pulling. It sounds simple, though it required the trainer to pretend I … more
Finally an update on Honey!
February 24, 2009 by rroberts19
Honey’s foster mom here! Sorry about the long lag time between posts, I’ve been away for the past two weeks. During these past two weeks, Honey went to stay with a prospective adoptive family for a trial period. I’m elated to report that everything has been going great and I think she’s found her forever home! Her new family is wonderful, they are a couple with two older dogs and two young children. They live on a large piece of property and treat their doggies like royalty. They also have lots of family and friends with dogs who visit often. … more
More good news about Blue Boy

I guess the next step is to find him a good home. He is still on some medications but we can discontinue them as soon as he urinates his whole bladder contents out on his own. It won’t be long!

Here’s his story: Apparently he jumped out of the back of a pick up in which his owner was taking him and his brothers and sisters somewhere (flea market perhaps). He broke his right front leg.
He was so scared and in so much pain when we picked him up from the shelter. He couldn’t move because they had given him so much pain medicine (a good thing!) but he was still scared. When I opened the box I could see the towel that he was lying … more
Blue Boy Update
February 12, 2009 by epjdog
Blue Boy had his surgery on Monday night (sorry it took so long to update). His is now urinating out of a small hole in his groin. You can’t see it. The good news is that it is not leaking at all. The bad news is that his bladder still is not contracting and emptying itself.
For the past few days he has been tolerating 3 x/day catheterization. He is such a good obedient boy. He doesn’t like … more
