The dogs and cats of Austin desperately need your help!

I know we often post on this blog our needs for help, and every time Austin has stepped up and helped us out in a major way. If it wasn’t for that help, we couldn’t have saved the nearly 1,400 dogs’ and cats’ lives we have saved up to this point. However, we are in a crisis Austin. With Spring came tons of puppies and kittens destined for death at the shelter, we were able to save almost every one of them until now. Unfortunately, our program is full of animals, and until we get more space, help, and funding … more

Tito – Just in Time

titoAn recent adopter has written on her blog about her new APA! rescue dog, Tito.  What she’s written is certainly how we imagine what our pets have gone through and how they feel on death row.  And the happy ending for Tito is what we envision for all of the pets soon and is what keeps us going.  We thank her for writing it and sharing his story.
He was on death row and out of time. In a strange place. Surrounded by strange barks he couldn’t identify. People sounds, too. … more

More details on Ad Council campaign

Maddie’s Fund has released a lot more information about the Ad Council campaign, “The Shelter Pet Project“, which I briefly mentioned in my notes from the No Kill Conference earlier this month.

“This is one of the best things that’s ever happened to animal welfare,” said Maddie’s Fund President Rich Avanzino. “I truly believe this campaign has the potential to end the killing of healthy and treatable shelter pets nationally.”

An international advertising agency, DRAFTFCB, who is designing this campaign, began with research and their numbers are fascinating.  There are pro-adoption people, who … more

Another life saved!

DoggieDu2009c(2)

Sugar was scheduled to be killed at the shelter in March of this year. The day before she was to die, APA got some space in foster care and was able to pull her out of the shelter. She was adopted by a fantastic family, who emailed us recently with an update on Sugar. Here is what she says:

“I adopted Lovey (renamed Sugar) in early March from the PetSmart at Mueller, and it has been wonderful! We have finished our first obedience class, and have been working up to 3 … more

Jude graduates!

A loud WHOO HOO!!! could be heard echoing through the hill country recently as Jude successfully completed his training course at the Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior.

For those of you who don’t know, the Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior is situated in the hill country in southwest Austin. All training is outside in a tree-filled setting. And, in between training exercises the dogs must take a two minute walk with the opportunity to splash around in baby pools filled with water. And boy does Jude love to splash in the baby pools. (If his new forever family … more

Prom King '09 is on right, photo by www.fodografy.com

Thanks to everyone who came out to our first annual Pet Prom at Torchy’s Trailer Park on Sunday.

Just seeing all of the pets dressed up, like the ones in this photo, many of whom are APA! alumni, was reason enough to declare the event a success.  (Raising $4,000 didn’t hurt either!)

You can view more photos on our Facebook page.

We’re so appreciative of everyone who helped make this event so special.  We know we sound like a broken record – … more

Update on Coco Baby

Coco Baby was adopted on Thursday.  Below we have an email from her new family.  But first, here is a video of Coco Baby in her foster home with her pals.

“She is doing great!  With Tim and I being home all of the time she gets almost constant attention and beats up on my other (much larger) Chihuahua.  Rocky is adjusting though and loves having someone to chase him around!  When my kids sit on the floor she will run right up to them and make herself at home in their laps, she actually seems to love everyone … more
