Update on Zera, the Rottie

zera-1Zera Belle is still waiting for her forever home!  She has lost 10 pounds so far, and looks great!  She has about 10 more to go, before she can have surgery.  She is still taking medication daily for pain as well as lots of joint care supplements.

Zera loves to play in the water!  She is a beach girl!!  She will spend all day swimming and playing fetch with the tennis ball!  She also really enjoys playing chase with the water hose!  Zera is just a water loving fool.  But, who … more

Plans to lower kill rates even more

While we are thrilled that the kill rate has dropped to 30% this year, Austin’s rescue efforts are still leaving behind way too many great pets.  Based on our volunteers’ in-depth knowledge of Austin’s animal shelter (TLAC) and best practices in the industry, we approached city council with a proposal to help accelerate the reduction in our kill rate.

We will be discussing the proposal at the Animal Issues Forum this month, which happens to be tonight and Thursday afternoon.  Please visit their website to get more details about times and the Forum itself.

The details in our … more

Third quarter results

Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC)1 finished their 3rd quarter of their fiscal year in June.  TLAC killed 4,302 (30%) dogs and cats so far this year, as opposed to 7,416 (46%) this time last year.

On the intake side…

Thanks to the Mission: Orange team (ASPCA, TLAC, Animal Trustees of Austin, Emancipet, and Austin Humane Society) and many others working so hard to prevent births and lower intake,  intake is still down.  Intake of dogs and cats this year is 14,123 compared to 15,910 last year.

No doubt, the big decrease in intake has played a large part in that reduction in kill … more

Rescuing the dogs from the N. Texas puppy mill

A couple months back I went to Waco, TX to train to be an EARS Volunteer with the UAN (Emergency Animal Response Services with United Animal Nations). EARS volunteers deploy during natural disasters as well as puppy mills and hoarding cases and set up temporary shelters across the United States.

Consequently, I deployed last Thursday to aid in the temporary sheltering of over 500 dogs from the Fort Worth/Maggic Pets puppy mill bust. I was pretty nervous when I agreed to go since I knew I was going to have a very tough time dealing with the cruelty those … more

Puppy mills

A big local story right now is about the  puppy mill in North Texas that authorities shut down due to animal cruelty.  One of our volunteers was there all weekend and is working on a story that we’ll publish soon.

Did you know that all dogs from pet stores are from puppy mills?  Responsible breeders do not sell their pets through pet stores.

The Humane Society of the United States has been doing a lot of work to expose where puppies from pet stores are really coming from.  The pet stores will tell you that they … more

Emancipet cuts did not make it into final city budget!

We just got word from Emancipet that the budget which was presented to City Council today did not include the budget cuts to animal services and the spay/neuter funding.  Read more>>

Thank you to everyone who came out to the town hall meetings – the city heard you and you saved the funding for these important programs!

Taylor Animal Shelter closes gas chamber after complaints

While we hope one day that all cities will be no-kill, we are happy that our neighbors to the north in Taylor, Texas, have finally come around to a more humane method of euthanasia. We are thrilled that the residents and pet lovers of Taylor spoke out – and that their pleas were heard. See the story here on the city’s decision to stop euthanizing animals with a gas chamber.
