Final planning before Monday’s Council meeting

Thank you to all who attended last night’s Animal Advisory Commission (AAC) meeting.

After the Council resolution directing the AAC and City Staff to come up with an Implementation Plan for making Austin a no kill city, the AAC and City Staff spent 3 months planning and conducting public input meetings. The AAC sent the plan to Council a few weeks ago and earlier this week, City Staff released their own version of the plan.

Last night the Animal Advisory Commission voted to reject the proposed Implementation Plan created by the City Staff. AAC felt the proposal did not do enough to … more

Meet Lucy

Lucy is a little bit of a diva. Even her body size matches her personality. Lucy’s “more to love” frame had the people at Town Lake convinced she was a he and dubbed her Landry. Once they brought her in for surgery they realized she needed a new name.

Lucy was obviously somebody’s cat. Cats don’t get that fat – excuse me, big boned – living on scraps. Lucy was found on the street, dropped off at the shelter and when no one came in to claim her an APA! foster parent brought Lucy into her home.

You really … more

Austin No Kill Coalition

Update 3/4/10:  The subcommittee passed the no kill plan and it’s going to the full Council this Thursday, March 11th for a vote.  We still need people to join the Coalition, send letters to Council, and come to Thursday’s meeting.

We need your help this week.  Next Monday, March 1st, is the City Council subcommittee meeting to discuss the implementation plan to make Austin a no kill city.

We have launched the Austin No Kill Coalition.  The Coalition is a collective, grass roots, community voice with the shared goal of a no kill Austin.

We are trying to get 1,000 individuals and … more

Lebowski at physical therapy

Lebowski is getting better all the time. Here is video of him “walking”.

He is getting a lot better and has started to pick his back feet up a bit instead of just skating around on them. AND he lifted his leg and peed on my garden! Not the most attractive behavior, but I am sure he is pleased with this improvement.

Here is video from his first physical therapy session.

He has to work on building strength and stability in his back legs. He still tends to bear most of his weight on … more

Flyer for Ava

Here is our supermodel Ava’s new flyer. We’d love the help of distributing it to help her find a home!

Working Together

Zane is the inspiration behind the entire Healthy Dogs, Healthy People program. He's the very definition of an untrained, unsocialized adolescent dog. Zaniac is now adopted but will always be loved and remembered here at APA!.

Record Adoptions Yesterday

Congratulations to 16 cats and kittens who went to their forever homes yesterday at the Ohlen Petsmart Valentine’s Day adoption event. Here are just a few of those lucky cats and a few more who are still waiting to find the love of their lives! Could that be you?

Both Alfie and Ellie found homes.

Momma cat Nougie and all her babies were adopted.

Everyone’s favorite little talker Zepplin went to a great home where she can play with kids all day long.

AAC recommendations and APA’s proposal

After 3 months of public meetings and more research of best practices nationally, the Animal Advisory Commission submitted their plan of recommendations to City Council last week.

Part of that plan is APA’s proposal to increase our partnership with the City and run their adoption program.

We believe we can leverage our huge volunteer team, foster program, off-site adoption program, and expertise in low-cost, high-volume  spay/neuter to move more animals through the program to adoption – 3,754 more animals (in addition to the 10,000 the city is already processing), to be exact.  And all for a lower cost … more
