Austin Pets Alive! has established partnerships with local and national organizations to support its programming, refer and exchange services and share resources. Without the continued cooperation of these partners, our job would be much more difficult.

Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC)
Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC), the only open intake animal facility in Austin, admits more than 25,000 animals per year, including strays and owner surrenders. In 2008, roughly half of those animals were euthanized. In an attempt to lower these numbers, TLAC has been working with Mission Orange and APA! to both decrease shelter intake and increase the number of live animals leaving the center. TLAC has many progressive programs such as free community spay/neuter, innovative Return to Owner policies that include fee waiver with spay/neuter, volunteer programs that enhance animal life in the shelter, community outreach programs, and rescue networking.
TLAC is the most important partner APA! has in the growth of the Animal Resource Center. APA! is working closely with TLAC, which has provided invaluable surrender trends and statistics, to identify ways of intervening before an animal is surrendered and improving the survival chances of animals slated for euthanasia.
Animal Trustees of Austin
Animal Trustees of Austin, Inc. (ATA) is a nonprofit animal welfare organization. ATA was founded by concerned citizens desiring to help lost, abused, and abandoned animals in Austin and surrounding counties. ATA is made up of staff and volunteers united by one common interest – the welfare of the animals. ATA operates a spay/neuter clinic, wellness clinic, and offers basic veterinary care. ATA has spayed/neutered over 75,000 animals in Austin since 1997 and offered wellness services to over 91,000 animals since 2002. ATA is a member of the ASPCA Mission Orange.
APA! is proud to be partnering with ATA to help animals that need more than just basic care. ATA will be handling heartworm treatments, fracture repairs, and other illnesses that APA! cannot accommodate at this time.
FixAustin.org
FixAustin.org is a grassroots political campaign working to end the killing of dogs and cats in our city shelter by creating change at our City Council level. FixAustin.org is a strong proponent of the No Kill Advocacy Center’s no-kill sheltering method, and wants to see Austin become a no-kill city.
FixAustin.org is partnering with APA! to create much-needed foster homes and raise awareness in the community through their own database, the media, and the city government. APA! is fortunate to have a few FixAustin.org members serving as committee members on the APA! Resource Center planning committee.
PETCO
PETCO raises tens of millions of dollars in donations each year to support companion animals. Its charitable foundation partners with animal welfare nonprofits to provide the resources that will help them continue to make a difference in the lives of the companion animals in our nation.
PETCO has been a loyal supporter of Austin Pets Alive! since our no-kill mission was reinvigorated in June 2008. Local PETCO stores chose Austin Pets Alive! as the beneficiary of a Christmas fundraiser in 2008. The Great Hills Trail PETCO Store hosted a special Halloween adoption event for our cat program in 2009. Austin Pets Alive! became a PETCO Foundation Charitable Partner that same year, and soon after received a generous grant of in-kind supplies to support our programs for unweaned kittens and puppies recovering from parvo.
In 2010, PETCO donated the use of their space for cat adoption centers. APA! now has two adoption centers at local PETCOs where cats live and meet with the public to be adopted, which will save 500 cats per year.
In 2011, PETCO sponsored our surgery room in our building, allowing us to purchase the supplies necessary for our veterinary surgical ward.
PetSmart
When PetSmart, Inc. was established in 1988, its founders made a conscious decision not to sell dogs and cats. Instead, they established a PetSmart Charities Adoption Center located inside each of the 900 PetSmart® stores across the United States and Canada.
APA! is becoming a PetSmart Charities Adoption Partner so that we can bring our homeless pets to the center to help find them loving homes. Becoming a PetSmart Charities Adoption Partner is a proven way to save more lives, and we are excited to be working with them at the Georgetown, 51st Street, Parmer, and Lakeline stores.
The Banfield Charitable Trust
The Portland, Oregon-based Banfield Charitable Trust funds programs that make the world a pet-friendlier place. Its priority is in supporting programs that keep families and their pets together. Austin Pets Alive!’s Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.) program perfectly fits this mission, and it was rewarded with a generous $10,000 grant from the Trust in March 2010. The grant will fund the P.A.S.S. hotline along with its newer Last Chance Program. Both projects are proving effective in keeping pets out of Austin’s Town Lake Animal Center by helping their families overcome problems. The Trust is the charitable arm of the Banfield Veterinary Hospitals located inside PetSmart Stores.
Pedigree Foundation
The Pedigree Foundation, created by dog food maker Pedigree out of its concern for the four million dogs that end up in shelters or at rescue organizations across America each year, has created a grant to shine a spotlight on the plight of homeless dogs. At the end of 2010, Austin Pets Alive! was pleased to receive one of these grants, which will be used to benefit the dog adoption program. Pedigree donates a share of all its sales to the Foundation to fund grants.
The Binky Foundation
The Binky Foundation awarded one of its innovative First Steps grants to Austin Pets Alive! in January 2011. The grant is designed to provide critical seed money to new initiatives that promise to grow and bring significant benefit to animal protection. APA!’s First Steps grant will fund the much-needed basic training equipment for the Dog Behavior & Enrichment program. The Binky Foundation is dedicated to the protection of domestic and wild animals and of their habitats.
