Not every dog is born with perfect manners.
Our Louie’s Fresh Start program provides behavioral rehabilitation and intervention support for dogs with significant behavior challenges. These dogs were not previously saved from euthanasia because they are harder to support and retrain which translates to more time and money.
Many of them lived as strays, suffered pasts filled with abuse and/or neglect, or come to us with unknown histories but plenty of confusion about how to behave or interact with humans and other dogs. Though this program, they have proven time and again that they are dogs who deserve a second chance.
We need your help to give them one.
Each LFS dog costs anywhere between $250 to several thousand more to save than an average easier to place dog. By donating to Louie’s Fund, named for LFS alumni Louie who inspired the mantra, “If Louie can do it, any dog can!” you are directly helping us to get more dogs not only out of the shelter alive, but learning the skills they need to thrive as loved companion animals.
Louie’s Fund is the sole source of funding for APA!’s Dog Behavior Team.
It pays for training, professional evaluations, scholarships, dog handling equipment, enrichment toys, and whatever our pooches happen to need.

Comprehensive Support
APA!’s Dog Behavior Team works to offer comprehensive support that meets the needs of the dogs in our care and puts them on the path to thriving in adoptive homes. We offer multi-level trained handler programs (Love on a Leash, Behavior & Enrichment, & Louie’s Fresh Start Team), enrichment and socialization opportunities like TTouch, agility, basic training, canine massage, doga, and doggie playgroups, ongoing training workshops for volunteers & staff and more intensive support like Dog Mentors, behavioral foster homes, and professional trainer or behaviorist intervention.
Our goal is to give our dogs every opportunity to succeed.
