Canine Distemper Virus is a highly contagious, often fatal disease that infects countless shelter dogs each year due to lack of proper vaccinations. APA! is the only rescue in Central Texas that will actively take distemper dogs in an effort to try to save them. Caring for a dog suffering from distemper can be a rewarding experience, but the road to recovery can be long and difficult for both dog and caretaker.
Our goal of Ozzy’s Team is to provide support for the people helping dogs with distemper in three ways:
Support Network
APA! offers the Canine Distemper Support Network, a community of people on Facebook who make their various talents available for caretakers of dogs infected with distemper seeking non-emergency, non-medical advice. The network can answer a variety of questions, including how to find medical care, how to encourage sick dogs to eat and drink, various comfort and basic care advice and non-medical pain management techniques. In addition, caring support mentors are available to provide a kind ear or word to help caretakers through the long and often difficult road that the illness brings.

Resource Center
Ozzy’s Team works to compile and update information and resources for caretakers to access. Information includes links to studies and treatments, recipes, suggested supplements, reports of medication and care schedules for specific dogs, etc. At this time, the resource center is in its infancy with plans to continually add new, valuable information.

Fundraising
The cost of treating distemper is very high due to the length of the disease – approximately $500 per case. Through 1-2 annual events and an ongoing online campaign, Ozzy’s Fund assists with the cost of treatment for APA! dogs suffering from distemper.
