FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, a condition that weakens a cat’s immune system. Most of us have heard of FIV, however, myths about the disease abound and are easily mistaken for reality.

Judd is a sweet, mellow Manx mix. He loves ear scratches and will let you know when he isn’t getting enough by giving gentle “head butts!” Judd is also FIV positive (+). Read Judd’s full profile.
Let’s break down some of the … more

Olak came to TLAC with a very bad leg – broken with terrible open wounds. Apparently, his owner had tried to fix his leg with popsicle sticks and tape. He wasn’t given any veterinary care. Then he dropped his cat off at the shelter.
Despite his serious wounds, Olak is the friendliest little kitten – he tries to leap in your arms as soon as you open the cage. He has a healthy appetite and is doing ok now in his wonderful foster home.
Unfortunately, his wounds … more

Willie is a precious brown tabby with white markings. He is a bottle baby who was rescued at barely 3 weeks old with his sister, Wildfire, a black & white tuxedo. Willie is good bottle eater, loving & playful. We are looking for a special foster home for these two gorgeous siblings. Willie is a very special kitten because he may have Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH).
What is CH?
Basically, it’s an underdeveloped cerebellar, which is a complex part of the central nervous system tucked in near the brain. In both people and … more

And you better believe this spunky little firecracker isn’t taking no for an answer! Sassy is like that really hot chick at school with the goofy sense of humor and effortless confident glow. She knows what she wants and she’s got a repetoire of adorable tricks up her sleeve to get it.
To put it as concisely as we can, Sassy is 100% pure awesomeness. Her face is uniquely beautiful with an intangible silliness and almost constant expression of curiosity. She looks like an animated cartoon princess. She’s never … more

During kitten season Town Lake Animal Center receives several feral female cats along with their litters of tiny adorable kittens.
Feral cats have had little to no human interaction and are wary of people. You can imagine the shock these cats experience in a crowded noisy shelter and then afterward when caring foster parents bring the brood home.
It is difficult to transform a feral from frightened and untrusting into a cuddly lap cat but her kittens have a better chance. Early interaction with her babies ensures that the kittens will bond with humans … more

Some of you may remember the adorable Tiny from his previous post looking for a walking buddy. He came to APA! simultaneously morbidly obese and malnourished, as well as heartworm positive. A few weeks ago, Tiny moved into a foster home to continue with his gentle weight loss and to go through heartworm treatment. He’s been doing wonderfully and his foster sent us the following report…
“Tiny is doing well. He is such an easy foster, even through heartworm treatment, as he loves to lounge. He loves dinner time … more

Adult cats are often overlooked this time of year when shelters and adoption events are overrun with exciting new kittens. APA! is desperate to take in each and every kitten and pregnant mom that come into the shelter but with so many little ones in foster homes there is not much room left for adult cats. Being old is not a crime!
Currently several adult kitties (two years and older) are in APA! foster homes. These older cats may take a little longer to get adopted than those tiny kittens but there are people out there who want and love a … more

As first mentioned in a previous post, these kittens were rapidly deteriorating and reduced to skin and bones in their struggle to survive. We are glad to report that they are eating on their own, gaining weight, and playing with the other foster kittens. After several days of force feeding and receiving high-calorie food supplements, the kittens began to have more energy and an interest in food. They were still quite thin, but would tote around large, round bellies after mealtimes. They are still separated … more
