There's just something about Chewy!

When this short little sausage roll struts by with his ears bouncing, tail wagging, hips swaying, and a tennis ball or his favorite Lamb Chop toy in his mouth, everyone he passes has to smile and maybe even laugh... it really is impossible not to. This "Chewy Effect" is also transmitted through a camera - don't believe us? We dare you to look at his pictures and video without smiling or feeling a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart.

Chewy is a delight and has quite the fan base at the shelter. His passion and skill for fetching are known far and wide - he dares you to tell him he's a senior pup! In between fetching sessions, he's been known to plop down on the floor and roll the ball back and forth to you with his nose. Chewy also loves water and he loves to play fetch in the shallow water and even swims for short distances.

Since late July Chewy has been in a foster home and has proven to be a more wonderful dog than we already knew he was! He is now crate-trained, he is calm and his body is no longer stressed. We have all loved seeing him carry a toy around with him, but it was a coping mechanism and he no longer needs to carry a toy around. But he will do it if you want him to, because he still really loves toys. He has been proving to his foster mom how smart he is with little things daily and has become really affectionate.

Not only is Chewy housebroken, a comedian, and a stellar athlete... he's also a scholar and is in APA!'s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Chewy has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Chewy is learning skills like sit and down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," coming when called and "Place", which means he will go to a specific place in your home on command.

Once Chewy successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Chewy has worked hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with Chewy after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together.
