Leroy is an old man with the soul of a puppy. While other dogs his age are mostly interested in the couch, Leroy still loves toys, loves playing fetch, and still gets the zoomies around the yard. Not that he doesn't appreciate the couch. A lot.

Leroy's signature move is to lay a big sloppy kiss on you and then run away as if you wouldn't know it was him. For all his goofiness and affection, he can be a bit shy with new people, but you won't have any trouble knowing when you've earned his trust (see: big sloppy kisses). He is extremely treat-motivated and they're the quickest way to win his heart and mind.

Leroy recently had an extended sleepover at a volunteer's home and she had great things to say about him. He was full of love and asked to be petted often. He promptly played with all of his stuffed toys and made sure each had a turn and had a blast with the Kong Wobbler. He also had really good manners and didn't try to get on the furniture once he knew he wasn't allowed on it. He slept through the night on his cot and was respectful of his space.

Leroy has been going to playgroup regularly and has been making new friends. It's fun to see Leroy romping around with pups of all sizes. He's a gentle giant and happily runs along side his buddies. He and a feisty lil' gal named Calliope have recently become fast friends and have a blast together. He enjoys his walks too. It's not unusual to see him trotting along with a squeaky toy in his mouth for the entire trip. When he's not out and about, Leroy likes to hunker down with a bully stick snack in one paw and squeaky toy in the other.

Leroy is also a smart pup and is learning a bunch of new skills in APA!'s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Leroy has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Leroy is learning skills like walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free", coming when called and has already mastered "Place", which means he will go to a special place in your home on command.

Once Leroy successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Leroy is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with him after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193

It doesn't take a lot to make Leroy happy and it won't take long for you to fall in love when you look into his warm, brown eyes. Come meet this sweet fella, and make sure you bring a squeaky!
