Check out Montana's Videos!

Montana came to Austin from Houston after Hurricane Harvey. Although not much is known about his experiences prior to arriving at the shelter, this energetic youngster is proving to be a quick study who loves to learn and has already picked up, sit, down, come, and place. He is open to experiencing what comes his way and would be a great partner for someone who is active and would enjoy having a canine training buddy.

Montana knows how to enjoy the small things in life like toys, but especially tennis balls. Montana LOVES tennis balls and his main goal in life seems to be searching them out. He quickly learned that the bins in the shelter play yards are where they're kept, and he makes a beeline to the bins as soon as he enters the yard. Montana is also really happy when he sees his human friends! Second to tennis balls, Montana's favorite thing is hanging out and having fun with his humans - playing fetch, going on walks and working on his skills with his buddies are good times to Montana! Montana also has an independent side and is great at keeping himself entertained. He's spent time in the home of a volunteer where he's proven to be both house and crate-trained and enjoyed the break from the shelter to play fetch in a real backyard, as well as some lazing about. As energetic as Montana is, he does enjoy his down time.

Montana has smarts and energy to burn and we think would make a good agility and running partner. In fact, Montana is so smart that we've put him in APA!'s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Montana has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Montana is learning skills like walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," and coming when called. His trainer is so impressed with his performance so far that she's nicknamed him "Good Boy Montana".

Once Montana successfully completes all the skills on his training plan he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Montana working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with Montana after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based:

Montana's an inspiring guy with lots of heart and spirit, and he'd love a home where he can get his fair share of exercise and one with someone who would enjoy training with him. Come meet this great pup!
