Mad Hatter is a sweet, gentle boy who has a very hopeful look about him. Despite being very shy, he wags his tail A LOT. Maybe he thinks if he wags his tail enough, it'll help him overcome his shyness so he'll be loved on by his human friends, because this guy seems really seems to love people. He has a very friendly vibe to him and sneaks up to give people quick kisses, then runs away, his tail is wagging the entire time.

On his sleepovers with volunteers, Mad Hatter has proved to be very well-mannered in the home. He thought a window blind was a fun toy, but he stopped as soon as his hostess told him no. He's a quiet dog to have around and takes treats gently. He also enjoyed exploring the yard and going for walks.

Mad Hatter is doing well with the other dogs in playgroup, and we think a home with another sweet doggie companion to help him come out of his shell would be ideal.

Mad Hatter is also thriving in APA!'s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Mad Hatter has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Mad Hatter is learning skills like sit and down, walking nicely on a leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," coming when called and "Place", which means he will go to a specific place in your home on command.

Once he successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, Mad Hatter will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Mad Hatter is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with him after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together.
