Polk was surrendered by his previous owners because he was kept tied up in the backyard and kept chewing through his leash. We guess it worked because now Polk is living it up at the shelter where he has human and canine friends alike and gets to go to playgroup every day. Polk loves every new person he meets and always acts like he just found his new best friend.
Polk loves going on long walks, is great on leash and is very in tune with whoever's walking him. He has an exuberant play style and he thinks everything's a toy, but even if it's not, he will happily trade you for an appropriate one. A real outdoorsy pup, Polk likes getting his paws wet and sniffing all the new smells. And he's a great car passenger too - "Adventure time?! Let's go!" An ideal day for Polk would start with a nice hike, then back home for a romp around the yard and a game of fetch, then settling down and being brushed and eating yummy treats. As much as Polk loves to run around and have fun, he's also ready to chill with his people for a quiet night in.
Polk also enjoys learning new things in APA!'s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Polk has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! He is learning skills like sit and down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," coming when called and "Place", which means he/she will go to a specific place in your home on command.
Once Polk successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! He is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with Polk after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. An all around happy dude, Polk is more than ready to be a part of family that will include them in their activities and give him a nice soft bed to sleep in (He wouldn't say no to a backyard with a kiddie pool either). In return, he promises to be your best buddy in the world. Come meet this great pup!
