Tommy is a silly, sweet and loyal pup with floppy ears, a houndy physique and an eager smile. He can be wary of strangers, particularly men, but once you're friends with him, you become the center of his world. Not only does he love being pet and will climb right into your lap, but when Tommy sees his favorite people at the shelter, he barks, wiggles, dances and jumps for joy, hoping they'll make their way over to him. It's like having your own personal fan club every time he spots you. And while Tommy reserves his playful side for the other dogs in playgroup, with his people he's all about the cuddles. He's just affectionate, goofy and really good boy at heart.

Tommy has a medium energy level, so he doesn't need a lot of outings to satisfy him. He's pretty wound up in the shelter environment, but once he settles in to a consistent routine in his new home, he should be one happy camper. Tommy has good home manners - he's house-trained and has done well left home alone uncrated. He's also a smart pup who's thriving in APA!'s Total Obedience Program (TOP), which is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test.

As a TOP dog, Tommy has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week. He's already mastered skills like sitting with distraction, distance and duration; down, shake, recall, and he's learning other skills like sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs and "place", which means he will go to a specific place in your home on command.

Once Tommy successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Tommy is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with him after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193

Tommy would love a lower traffic home with a yard, and in return he promises to make sure you never feel anything but completely loved. If you could use some of that in your life, come meet this great pup!

INTERESTED IN FOSTERING?

This pup is currently located at our Town Lake Animal Center (1156 W. Cesar Chavez, but use 1200 Reserve Road for mapping purposes). We'd love to show them off to you! To learn more about them, head in any day between 11:30AM-6:00PM. We are open 7 days a week! Go to Building B and ask to speak with a Matchmaker about fostering this pup. You will sit down and discuss all we know about them and, if it's a good fit, get to meet them then! Please budget for a wait time unless you arrive right at opening as we cannot dictate walk-in traffic (wait times tend to be highest in the evenings and on weekends). If this pup ends up not being the best fit, we have so many other pups in need that we can suggest for your household on the spot!
