"Amma is wicked smart."

Beautiful and athletic, Amma is dog that that thrives on clear boundaries, love and exercise and likes to be challenged to keep that amazing mind stimulated. As much as Amma loves hanging out with her person, she is definitely not up for being a full-time couch potato. What she is up for is whatever you want to do and is just so happy to have you with her!

Amma's a very happy pup and her tail is always wagging - she wiggles and wiggles when her friends come to get her out of the kennel, and she loves getting their pets and attention. While Amma can be wary with strangers, she becomes very devoted to her people and is so eager to do what is asked of her. Once she's completed a command, she looks at you for approval and is so thrilled when you are pleased!

A medium to high energy pup, Amma likes running around the yard chasing squirrels and absolutely loves to go for walks. She follows your lead to know that new things are safe, and she also just started agility training, which is helping her build her confidence. Amma's also an amazing houseguest, is very house-trained and never had an accident on extended sleepovers with volunteers. She never counter-surfs and can be left home for long hours uncrated without any issues.

Amma's volunteer trainer says Amma is one of the smartest, if not the smartest, dog she's ever known, so it should come as no surprise that she's thriving in APA's Total Obedience Program, so much so that she recently became TOP Dog Ready, which means Amma has already learned all the skills in her training plan.

The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP Dog, Amma has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help her learn the skills to become the best dog she can be!

Dogs in the program learn skills including sit and down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers, calmly walking past another dog, staying in a sit or down until told "free," coming when called (Amma's recall is perfect) and "place, which means Amma will go to a specific place in your home on command. Amma can easily generalize and find a new "place" very quickly (She and her trainer practice doing this on rocks outside). Amma also knows "walk away" for when she's too fixated on something, and she will walk away and leave it alone. And she can shake with both paws!

Amma has worked hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with Amma after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193

Amma is looking for a home with someone who is willing to continue her training, and she'd love one with a back yard for her to play in. If that sounds like yours, come meet this amazing pup!
