Brooks is a happy, spirited and very talkative pup. A first-rate conversationalist, if you say something to Brooks, he will answer you! This boy's got opinions and he's not shy about sharing them. Though he's not much of a barker, Brooks will go around harrumphing and grumbling and huffing his opinion on every situation. His expressive eyes also have a lot to say: "You're my best friend," "Where's the treat?" and "Let's go jump in the lake!"

A sporty senior, Brooks is usually pretty mellow in the home, but he perks up on walks and loves when they go for a long time. He's also 100% water bug and he will launch himself into the lake fearlessly and without hesitation. He loves to retrieve sticks and especially loves it when you jump into the lake with him. Whether it's swimming, hiking or jogging, Brooks is happy to match your pace. He just loves to be outside in the sunshine and he relishes every moment adventuring with his person.

As athletic as he is, Brooks is also the perfect, chilled-out house guest. Calm, house-trained and all around well-behaved in the home, Brooks is very good at keeping himself occupied, content to settle in with a good rawhide and some toys. But his favorite activity at home is getting scratches, particularly butt scratches, and you can easily buy his loyalty with them. And treats. Brooks will do just about anything for a treat.

Brooks adores attention, and when his person greets houseguests warmly and invites them inside, Brooks takes a couple of sniffs, then expects them to give him butt scratches too. He also enjoys playing tug of war, and when he gets excited, he'll jump around on his hind legs and howl a little bit. He's up for playing with toys if you are, but otherwise is very content to snooze for hours at a time, especially if he is curled up next to you.

This spirited guy is also thriving in APA!'s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Brooks has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Brooks is learning skills like sit and down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," coming when called and "Place", which means he will go to a specific place in your home on command.

Once he successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, Brooks will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Brooks is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with him after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together.
