Despite his walrus size, Thor is a gentle boy who is so grateful to anyone who'll be nice to him, and he always greets his favorite people with a big happy smile. He's super-affectionate and likes to be near his person, resting his head on their knee and asking for some of those sweet scritches and giving kisses in trade.

As long as he's with his favorite human, Thor is pretty much up for anything. This goofy lovebug will put up with all of your antics as long as you just give him what he really wants: cuddles, please! While he's happy to be a couch potato (or floor potato - your choice - Thor won't get up on the furniture unless you invite him), he also enjoys getting out on long walks with his person.

Thor comes fully house and crate-trained, and he will bring all his toys in his crate so he can hang out with them. Thor absolutely adores his toys and even puts them away when he's done! He has a favorite toy snake that he carries around the house with him, and he's very gentle and dainty with it.

This gentle giant is in APA!'s Total Obedience Program (TOP), which is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Thor has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn skills like walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," coming when called and "place", which means he will go to a specific place in your home on command.

Thor is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with him after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193

Thor previously lived in a foster home with another dog, and they had the best times romping around, playing and rough-housing, up until the very second they'd fall asleep nose to nose on the ground. He also goes to playgroup with his canine friends at the shelter and could go home with a well-matched doggie sibling.

If you like your dogs big, sweet, gentle and goofy, and you can provide plenty of toys and love, Thor will be thrilled to meet you!

INTERESTED IN FOSTERING?

This pup is currently located at our Town Lake Animal Center (1156 W. Cesar Chavez, but use 1200 Reserve Road for mapping purposes). We'd love to show them off to you! To learn more about them, head in any day between 11:30AM-6:00PM. We are open 7 days a week! Go to Building B and ask to speak with a Matchmaker about fostering this pup. You will sit down and discuss all we know about them and, if it's a good fit, get to meet them then! Please budget for a wait time unless you arrive right at opening as we cannot dictate walk-in traffic (wait times tend to be highest in the evenings and on weekends). If this pup ends up not being the best fit, we have so many other pups in need that we can suggest for your household on the spot!
