Alligator isn’t your average cat. Some of her favorite hobbies include exploring on leash, traveling the globe, and meeting new people. She’s also a parkour pro, so it’s safe to say you won’t be finding this lady sleeping her days away.
So how did Alligator find her love for adventure? We turned to her adopter, Rebecca, for the answers.
Rebecca adopted Alligator after hearing about the great need for adopters post Hurricane Harvey. After hearing wonderful things about APA! from fellow UT students, she decided to come by to find the perfect little buddy to join her in her apartment – although in the end, she wasn’t the one who did the picking: “I had never had a cat before and didn't quite know how to interact with them, but she approached me and immediately started rubbing herself on me and meowing at me. The volunteers there that day told me she was never that friendly with anyone else. I was sold!”
And so Alligator and Rebecca’s life together began. Seeing the photos of Alligator now, you’d never believe she wasn’t always the adventurous cat she is today. She’s always been curious, but was a lot more cautious in the beginning, often hiding under the couch. From the start, Rebecca hoped that Alligator would one day be comfortable on leash. “I had seen other adventure cats and I wanted her to experience the world like that too! She was a year old when I adopted her, so I knew she was young enough to adjust. I started slowly putting the harness and leash on the ground so she could think of them as hers. Then [had her wear] the harness around the house. Then slowly [made] our way down the front stairs of my apartment. I would take her out about once a week and we made it a little further each time.” She now happily wears her harness and feels at home exploring the outdoors.
These days you can find Alligator and Rebecca living their best lives on the Carribean island of Sint Maarten. She wears her harness and extended leash on the balcony so she can safely watch the birds and lizards without being tempted to escape. She’s an independent girl but still loves cuddle time with her mama.
One of Rebecca’s fondest memories with Alligator is when the two of them went on a week long road trip from Nevada to Florida: “I didn't think she would like the car, but she did! I kept her on the harness and leash while we drove and attached it to the headrest so she had freedom to roam and to eat or use the litter box I had set up in the back of the car. She loved watching the scenery pass and exploring the scenic desert road stops, and even camping in Colorado. People are always shocked to see a cat on a leash!”
Adventure is out there, and Alligator’s finding it, right along with her mama. It sounds like Alligator found the purrrfect forever home for her, and we couldn’t be happier.
