After months of negotiations and finalizing plans, Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) was thrilled to be officially appointed the partner to run the Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC) on November 10, 2011, after the city shelter, Austin Animal Center (AAC), relocated to its brand new location at Levander Loop on the east side of the city. APA! committed to providing more cage space to help the city adopt out more cats and dogs, and expects to save an additional 1,000 pets a year through this partnership.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, APA! volunteers and staff hustled to get this newest adoption site up and running to begin adoptions in time for the Thanksgiving Day weekend. The hard work paid off and TLAC opened just in time for holiday adopters to pick out their newest family pet! On Thursday, November 24, the grand re-opening of the TLAC space as an APA! adoption site, 10 dogs found their new families!
In the spirit of Black Friday, we ran a discounted adoption fee promotion where all black dogs and cats were just $25. Adoption fees were also waived completely at TLAC through the rest of the weekend to keep up the awesome high-volume adoption momentum. And it worked! Thirty-five dogs went home during our first opening weekend.
Our new TLAC site is off to a stellar start and with the help of the community will surely be another ingredient in Austin’s recipe for no-kill success. At this time, our immediate needs for this site include dog walkers daily from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8p.m., sheet and dog bed donations to keep the dogs toasty warm as temperatures continue to drop, cat litter, puzzle-style dog toys, yummy dog treats, and waste bags.
