For the past nine years, Austin Pets Alive! has teamed up with Austin Subaru and Rowing Dock to put on our largest parvo puppy fundraiser of the year. While the contributions we receive throughout the year impact every lifesaving program of ours, this event gives special love to some of our most vulnerable lives; and this year, despite COVID-19, is no different.
Set on continuing tradition, Austin Subaru pivoted to create our first ever Paddle for Puppies T-Shirt Fundraiser! These one-of-a-kind t-shirts are only available through August and support the vulnerable lives that our Parvo Puppy ICU works tirelessly to protect – lives like Lucas.
Lethargic and scared, Lucas was just six weeks old when he first arrived at APA!’s door. Ridden with parvovirus, he was feeling the effects throughout his entire body. This virus takes hold of puppies fast, so it was just a matter of time before the symptoms overcame this young life. Thankfully, a transporter drove Lucas to APA! as soon as he was found to have the virus. He was then immediately placed in our Parvo Puppy ICU to begin treatment.
Fast forward to months later, and you wouldn’t recognize Lucas as the same trembling puppy. Once he was well enough to be adopted, it wasn’t long before Katherine and Carlton brought him home. Now named Brando (due to his handsome looks), this sweet ball of love is completely healed of the virus and acting like a puppy should: spunky and full of life.
Carlton and Katherine share that they first decided to adopt Brando because of how loving, sweet, and adorable he was, and continues to be, but now knowing more of his background, they are so thankful to have him in their lives: “Brando is a parvo survivor, which means he’s kind of a miracle,” Carlton reflects. “Now that I know more about parvo and what Austin Pets Alive! does for parvo puppies and other dogs, we’re very grateful to have him.” The couple goes on to share that their favorite things about Brando are his cuddliness, how loving he is, and, of course, his sweet puppy floppiness!
“I love that he loves me so much,” shares Katherine. “I’ve never had a dog [who] just follows me around and gets so excited to see me when I walk in the room ... He is just such a sweetheart.”
