Benny was picked up Dec. 26 emaciated and covered with feces. He was one sick puppy. Suffering from a parasite called Coccidia; this stomach bug caused him to have terrible diarrhea.
Benny's inability to hold anything down created another problem for him, a prolapsed rectum. There is no way to mince words for how he was discovered. Approximately 4 inches of his colon was hanging out of his anus and he was sitting on it for four long days in a cage.
He received a procedure known as "reduction" which places the colon back where it belongs and he was sewn in order to keep the prolapsing from recurring. Dr. Jefferson was hopeful that the exposed intestine would survive. Unfortunately, it did not and he received a second surgery to removed the damaged colon.
Poor little Benny also has a upper respiratory infection. He is in foster care and doing remarkably well.
The good news is that his prognosis is excellent and he is expected to make a full recovery and be a normal dog.
His medical costs are $400. Please donate and let's make 2010 Benny's year.
