Facebook is a great way to get the word out about animals...and that goes for not just rescue groups but individuals! For several weeks, local rescue groups and everyday animal lovers from as far away as Washington and Vermont shared a picture of 2 dogs at a local Austin shelter. In the photo, the dogs appeared scared and sad as they sat within their shelter run. This image was shared by thousands, and many of you sent them to us at Austin Pets Alive!. Our staff looked into it and kept our eye on the dogs, making sure their "at risk" status didn't heighten. We made the decision to pull the dogs last week and they are now together at our Town Lake Animal Shelter. (Ed. note: We have not included the aforementioned photo. You can find it posted by others on our Facebook page, but we prefer to showcase how they are today.)
Chiquita and Blaze were surrendered by their owner when they lost their home. The pups were frightened when they moved from one shelter to the next, but by their first morning here they were happily playing together in our yard with volunteers. They are two incredibly loving dogs, both with people and each other! Chiquita is quite the personality as she runs underneath Blaze's tall stature with an air of happiness around her. Blaze is the gentle giant who loves to love. They are both house trained, big fans of gentle wrestling and fetch, and happy to sit or "give you paw" with a simple request. Ultimately, they are best friends, and are waiting for a family to take them home together.
We are very thankful for the thousands that raised awareness about our new buddies so we can now push to find them a forever home!
Do you have room to make them a part of your family? Please stop by to meet the dynamic duo, or email [email protected] for more information. You can also watch a great video of them here!
If you can't adopt right now but would still like to help, here are 2 great ways that you can:
Sponsor them, or another one of our animals! Each dog or cat, on average, costs us $250 to spay/neuter, provide daily food, care, shelter, and general medicine. Sponsoring a specific pet is easy, and allows us to help save yet another animal when we're called to help. Simply visit the list of available dogs or cats, click on the animal you would like to sponsor, and fill out the donation form at the bottom of the page. Voila -- you are now the sponsor to an animal! If you sponsor at least $50, we'll send you a magnet frame with a picture of your guy or gal. You can put their photo on your fridge and remember every day that you've helped save someone's life.
Blaze and Chiquita are the definition of constant companions, and you can be one too. Be a Constant Companion for Austin's homeless dogs and cats by participating in monthly planned donations. It's simple! You never have to remember to write a check or mail an envelope. You determine the amount that you'd like to contribute monthly. Giving regularly allows you to have a greater impact on the welfare of animals by breaking down a generous total contribution into monthly amounts that fit your charitable giving goals. It takes a village to help keep Austin the largest No-Kill city in the nation!
Thanks to Culture Map Austin for the great feature on Blaze and Chiquita.
