Dutch, a 13-month-old Shepherd mix, was brought to APA! with significant trauma to his rear left leg. Radiographs done of his leg confirmed that he had a greenstick (or incomplete) fracture in his tibia, a broken femur and a broken digit, leaving his leg virtually beyond repair. After our medical team discussed the options it was determined that amputation was necessary to enhance his quality of life so we contacted BEEVET about performing the amputation.
Much to our delight, not only did the team at BEEVET Animal Hospital take really good care of Dutch during his surgery but his recovery was overseen by their very own Veterinary Service Coordinator, Laura Pierson, who volunteered to be his temporary foster.
Here’s what Laura told us about Dutch and his recovery under her watch.
“He's adapted to being a tripod very quickly - it probably helps that he couldn't use that leg for a little while before the surgery. He can run and jump and pull on the leash like his four legged buddies! He's a sweetie that likes to be active and playing. He’s also happy to just lounge on his bed and chew on his Kong toy. ... So far, he's great with the other dogs he's met and just wants to play with everybody he meets. He instantly makes an impact on new people too. They see his sweet face and his happy smile and just want to snuggle and coo over him. He loves all the attention he can get!”
At Austin Pets Alive!, we treat every animal that comes through our doors with the dignity and respect that we give our own pets and loved ones. We are so fortunate to live in Austin, a community of like-minded people who have supported our no kill initiative since 2008 through fostering, adoption, volunteering and donating to our rescue and adoption programs.
From Dutch and all of us at APA!, thank you for your continued support.
