Today is our annual No Kill Anniversary party, a moment in which we celebrate each year that Austin maintains our long-running status as the largest No Kill city in America.
This year we're celebrating eight years of being the safety net for the animals that typically don't stand a chance in an average shelter setting. For eight years, we have saved over 90 percent of homeless companion animals at risk for euthanasia in Central Texas. This year is particularly special, as the city has now mandated that to maintain No Kill in Austin, we must hold ourselves to a 95 percent standard of lifesaving.
On this very special day, we want to take a moment to remember why we are here and doing what we're doing. Austin Pets Alive! is the backup safety net for animals whose first line of defense fails them: the average shelter. We are not the average shelter. We have pioneered and established lifesaving programs that protect those homeless companion animals most at-risk for euthanasia; and through our successes in Austin, we are now on a mission to extend the Austin model of lifesaving across the nation through our educational program, American Pets Alive!.
Listen to our executive director, Dr. Ellen Jefferson, speak on behalf of where we've been, where we're at today, and where she hopes to see No Kill go within the next decade and beyond. Together, we can alter the current state of sheltering for the betterment of all companion animals.
There is still a chance to join us for tonight's No Kill Anniversary Party! Purchase your ticket before 5 PM this evening to join us at The Line Hotel for dancing, drinking, and heartwarming fun!
