Thank you to all who attended last night's Animal Advisory Commission (AAC) meeting.
After the Council resolution directing the AAC and City Staff to come up with an Implementation Plan for making Austin a no kill city, the AAC and City Staff spent 3 months planning and conducting public input meetings. The AAC sent the plan to Council a few weeks ago and earlier this week, City Staff released their own version of the plan.
Last night the Animal Advisory Commission voted to reject the proposed Implementation Plan created by the City Staff. AAC felt the proposal did not do enough to increase live outcomes at TLAC. And, failure to significantly increase live outcomes will result in Austin not saving enough lives to achieve the 90% live save rate to be a No Kill community.
The AAC asked the city staff to look at specific recommendations to increase live outcomes at TLAC. They also requested that staff put numbers to their recommendations for the number of lives saved for each recommendation, to ensure that their plan will save the additional 5,000 animals we need to save.
An additional meeting has been scheduled for Friday, February 26 at 6:00 p.m. The AAC and City Staff will continue working toward one joint plan that they can present to the Council subcommittee on March 1st.
