Shop Cat is quite the intriguing fellow. From his enchanting green eyes to his one and a half ears and two teeth, nothing about him is short of extraordinary – particularly being that he is the wise age of 16 years old. However, coming from the streets as a Feline Immunodeficiency Virus positive, deaf, and ringworm-covered feral cat, he has faced challenge after challenge to simply survive.
Originally found by another shelter, Shop Cat’s luck seemed to have finally run out when he was placed on their euthanasia list; but that’s exactly where Austin Pets Alive! comes in. We’ve pioneered the innovative lifesaving programs that go further than a little luck – they’re a guarantee to give each and every animal that comes through our doors a chance at survival.
After spending time in the APA! Medical Triage and Wellness Center, Calicivirus Treatment Center, and after being treated for ringworm through our Ringworm Adoption Center, Shop Cat transformed from a scraggly, thin stray into a strong, healthy feline. Not only was his health restored, but also his joyous, affectionate personality! He would even purr through exams! All Shop Cat needed was a chance to be himself – a chance he wouldn’t have gotten nearly anywhere else.
Not only did everyone at APA! fall in love with Shop Cat, but his foster mom Johnna did as well. Nearly a year ago, Johnna fostered Shop Cat to give him a loving home and warm place to sleep; but it didn’t take her long to realize that there was no way she could part with this quirky fellow, and proudly accepted him as a foster fail.
Today, Shop Cat spends his time watching his mom and dad play board games and gladly allows them to dress him up for any and every holiday. He is also the self-proclaimed king of blanket mountain and Instagram famous on his own personal account (@realshopcat) where he advocates for senior shelter animals like himself.
While Shop Cat’s story warms our hearts, his is not unlike many other cats across the country – their stories just don’t get to be told. In many shelters, being as old as Shop Cat is a death sentence, let alone being a senior kitty that is both FIV positive and riddled with ringworm.
APA! is the leading innovative shelter in the country in terms of lives saved. The lifesaving programs and protocols that we have pioneered are why cats like Shop Cat were and are given a fighting chance; but we couldn't have done, nor can we continue to do, any of this without you.
Now until May 9, we ask that you donate to our Fund the Shelters campaign to help us fight for at-risk cats all across Central Texas. Your donations are why we’re able to do what we do and will help us continue to save thousands of lives every year.
