The Situation: The Guadalupe River flooded and has caused loss of life and devastation in Kerr County. We're supporting hurt and displaced pets. Our team is in flooded areas, providing medical care onsite and transporting animals to APA!. We will be working with Kerrville Pets Alive! over the next several days and, if possible, bringing more pets from the Kerr County and other shelters. This will allow them to make space for the animals they are likely to see over the next few days and keep them closer to home. Thank you for stepping up to help pets in need!
7/5 Updates: While we continue to take in animals from Kerrville, due to flooding and evacuations in Georgetown as well, we are helping with Wilco (Williamson County Animal Shelter) to support those displaced animals! Over 50 pets have been transported to APA! from the Kerr and Williamson counties today, July 5.
7/6 Updates: Today we're coordinating a volunteer search and rescue group along the river banks of the flood for animals, as well as continuing to pull animals into APA!'s care from Georgetown and also Burnet County as flood affects continue. APA! has now taken more than 150 pets into our care from flood affected areas/shelters. We've received more than 2,000 responses to our help form below, thank you! We're working to respond to everybody as fast as we can.
7/7 Updates: Our flood emergency work continues today. We'll likely be receiving animals from Kerrville, Williamson County and San Angelo as well. APA! is primarily helping take animals from local shelters they already had in their care before the flood so they're able to better help with flood animals themselves. For those willing to help, our top need today: monetary donations!
7/8 Updates: We are in Kerrville again today helping locally with pets search, rescue and reunification, as well as continuing to help them intake and provide medical care to the animals coming in, and distributing supplies to community members in need. We're continuing to pull animals from the shelters above and Comfort was also hit hard so we are adding support for Kendall County today. For those willing to help, our top need today remains monetary donations.
7/9 Updates: We are continuing our work we've mentioned plus expanding our search and rescue/reunification for pets today in the Hill Country Humane area since we're hearing there may not be any for pets right now there. We've already now reached 400 pets we've brought into APA!'s care. (Note: These were in shelters before the flood or owner surrenders that we took in. Potentially owned animals are staying in their areas to better support reunification.) And we also completed a big flight overnight/into this morning through our transport program to find homes for the adoptables in areas with even more adoption capacity! Stay tuned to our social media to see this morning's flight story, and many other stories about our work right now and the amazing support from volunteers in the community. The outpouring has been overwhelming! Our top need remains monetary donations.
7/10 Updates: Our new search and rescue location is specifically in San Saba. There are no resources in the city for pet lost & found other than a one-woman nonprofit run out of her house and definitely no resources for flood search & rescue/community support so today we're expanding our efforts here! Our other activities also remain. If after you come to APA! to foster you haven't meet your match yet, Austin Animal Center also needs help so we encourage you to visit there as well! Our top need remains monetary donations.
7/11 Updates: Kerrville Pets Alive! is starting to recover so we're wrapping up our onsite activities there and continuing to help them remotely. Please continue to follow and support them though! Our work in San Saba continues today including cat search & rescue and we're bringing another entire load of community support pet supplies to them because it was all snatched up quickly yesterday by those in need and grateful. Thank you to everyone who has donated so we can support them! Our top need remains monetary donations.
7/12 Updates: In just over a week since the flooding began, we've now taken in more than 500 pets in need! And helped with many more at the local shelters in the flood affected areas we've been working with. We're wrapping up our work in person in San Saba now but helping with a few more supplies and resources remotely. We just brought Hill Country Humane animals into our care and coordinated a transport for animals in need in San Angelo, and we're starting to really feel the situation is finally getting under control. Despite the devastation we've seen, we've seen with the help of so many volunteers, fosters and partners so many lives saved. Our top need remains monetary donations as we continue getting the last flood related animals transferred, medical intakes and care with us.
7/13-7/26 Updates: Our flood response efforts now include a few more pulls and transports of animals from areas in need(some newly requesting after weekend rains), getting the animals settled, supplies sorted, last help and advice to the shelters, etc. We've now taken in more than 600 pets! We're also helping Austin Animal Center because they are reporting critical capacity and completed a new flood response help center for Sandy Creek! We still need monetary donations and the supplies below. But one thing is clear, this community is showing up! Among the darkness, Texans and people beyond have been beacons of light for each other. We’ll never be able to say it enough: YOU have made a difference for the pets and people who love them through this disaster. Thank you! We strive at APA! to be a gap filler where there aren't resources, like the immediate response to a disaster specifically for pets. Please consider joining us regularly if you haven't already! If you fostered, please keep fostering! If you volunteered, make sure to fill out our official process to get in the system(orientation requirements paused right now for faster sign up.) The animals will need us again and, with you, we'll be ready.
