Austin Pets Alive! Rescues Cat With Nowhere Else to Turn
September 25, 2015 (Austin, TX) - Austin Pets Alive! rescued a cat with severe injuries and multiple feline health conditions including Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) that had nowhere else to turn.
Initially found as a stray with noticeable injuries to his leg and brought to a local emergency clinic, Kekoa the cat was transferred into the care of Austin Pets Alive! because of its renowned Feline Leukemia Sanctuary that finds adoptive homes for FeLV+ cats.
Traditionally cats that test positive for Feline Leukemia are euthanized due to the highly contagious nature of the virus to other felines.
Monica Frenden, APA’s Cat Programs Manager said, “At APA!, we believe every cat deserves life and love, and cats with Feline Leukemia are no different. They are, happy cats with no symptoms who are available for adoption every day. We encourage everyone to come down to the shelter, learn about FeLV, and fall in love!”
One of only a few in the country, Austin Pets Alive!’s Feline Leukemia Sanctuary houses FeLV+ cats in an isolated environment while they await their adoptive families.
“Kekoa had a large leg wound which looked like it would need to be amputated. We took x-rays and could see pieces of metal embedded near the broken bones in the leg,” stated Jordana Moerbe, the Austin Pets Alive! Medical Clinic Manager. “Due to the extent of his wounds and the metal shards we concluded his injuries were probably caused by a gunshot.”
Due to the extent of his injuries, APA! Veterinarians performed surgery to amputate the leg and Kekoa is now recovering and thriving in foster care.
