Update 9/18 10:00 am: Thank you, Austin! We have raised plenty to cover the medical costs for Monty. If you came to our site to donate for Monty, we urge you to consider donating instead for our Save a Life Drive, to help us raise $50,000 to save 500 pets.
He is scheduled for surgery on Monday with one of the best specialists in Austin for this kind of surgery. We will have an update on Monday after the surgery.
If you are interested in adopting him, please send an email to [email protected].
Update 9/16 3:30 pm: More from Dr. Jefferson:
A local orthopedic specialist is going to attempt his surgery on Friday or Monday. He is on good pain killers and was loaded with parasites so we have dewormed him.
His legs have a lot of inflammation and we think the injuries are recent (within the last week) due to blunt force trauma- no idea what could do it without leaving scrapes and scratches.
His right leg is in much worse shape than his left. We are hopeful that after surgery he will not have arthritis in his left leg but might in his right when he is old (should not be a terrible problem for many years).
He will need pins, plates, and cross pins to fixate the fractures. He seems to be in good spirits- eating and drinking well.
Recovery time will be about 6 weeks. HOPEFULLY he will not need more than one surgery (they will do both knees the same day since he is compensating so well on his front end).
He is an amazing dog to figure out how to walk on his front legs without dragging his back legs. Most dogs can't figure that out or pull it off!
Update 9/16 2:30 pm: We were able to x-ray Monty's legs today. We are so thrilled to have received so many donations for him because it looks like we're really going to need them. In fact, the surgeries may be more difficult and costly than we originally thought. This poor boy has 2 back broken legs that are in really bad shape - one of his legs is broken in 6 different places.
We want to use this opportunity to remind everyone that we also have our Save a Life Drive going on right now. Just $100 can save the life of most pets. We are trying to raise $50,000 to save the lives of 500 dogs and cats.
Update 9/16 8:40am: Monty left TLAC last night with a foster. Thanks to Shelton Green and KVUE showing Monty's story last night, so far we have raised enough to fix one knee, if we don't find someone to do the surgery at a reduced cost.Thank you so much to everyone who saw his story and offered to foster him or donate money for his surgery!
Monty was found slowly wandering a parking lot, walking like a circus dog, balancing on his front 2 legs with his back 2 legs hovering in the air. Both of his back knees appear to be blown out.
Due to his injuries, TLAC cannot hold him and he has to be out TODAY. We need a foster home for him. We haven't x-rayed his legs yet, but are assuming that he will need surgery on both knees, which will run $1,500-2,000 per knee. Unfortunately, Dr. J. doesn't do these surgeries and we'll need a specialist.
We know his treatment will be expensive, but we can't let him die at TLAC. He is a super-cuddly sweet boy without a mean bone in his body. He's wonderful with other dogs and while we haven't had him around cats yet, we assume he'll be fine with them too. He is a small pit mix, only weighing 22 pounds for being 8 months old.
He's quite a trooper and seems happy, content, and pain-free while he gets along on only 2 legs.
If you can foster him, please send an email to [email protected] or fill out an online application noting that he's the dog you want to foster.
