For the past eight years, Austin Pets Alive! has teamed up with Austin Subaru and Rowing Dock to put on our largest parvo puppy fundraiser of the year. While the contributions we receive throughout the year impact every lifesaving program of ours, this event gives special love to some of our most vulnerable lives – lives like Remi’s.
Baby Remi came to us under one pound and afflicted with parvovirus. A harsh reality of this illness is that puppies a pound or less don’t typically survive; and it’s not always the course of the illness that these tiny lives can’t handle, it’s the aftermath.
“He tested negative for parvo but almost died two days later,” shares Ruben Paul, APA!’s Clinic Case Manager and Remi’s medical foster. Paul explains that fighting the parvo put Remi’s body in a bad spot – he used the energy he had to fight off the parvo, and now he was beginning to crash. After his glucose levels severely dropped, his little life teetered between life and death. While our medical team was able to get his glucose levels back to normal, he wasn’t in the clear just yet. During the following four days, Remi’s gums would pale, indicating his falling glucose levels, and Paul would have to take lifesaving steps to keep Remi from crashing once again. It was a very touch-and-go process.
Remi proved to be a fighter, though, an exception to the rule. After the fourth day of being unsure whether he was going to make it, Paul noticed a change. Remi began to get stronger. He began to eat and walk around, and his personality slowing began to break through.
Fast forward to a few weeks later, and Remi is the puppy he was always meant to be. Now pre-adopted, Remi spends his days curled up with his cat siblings, pawing for their attention.
In most other shelters, Remi wouldn’t have stood a chance. At APA!, we saw the fight he had in him, and made sure he was given the opportunity to live. Thankfully, Austin Subaru and Rowing Dock also recognize this fight, and see the value in our Parvo Puppy ICU.
This year, we were able to raise $25,000 for this very special program. This money will go to saving the lives of more puppies like Remi. We are so appreciative of Austin Subaru and Rowing Dock’s support, and for the support of those who came out in the early hours on the morning of the event to paddle for these amazing pups.
Cheers to eight years, and the years to come!
