Lost pets aren't just a top-of-mind concern for Austin animal services, but for communities across the country. While microchipping has increased the chances of a lost pet finding its way back home, there are still obvious flaws in the system, as many family pets continue to enter the sheltering system each and every year. PetHub aims to change this.
"When we started PetHub, the RTO for dogs was less than 18% and under 2% for cats when they go missing. With PetHub's 'Pack Members' found through its services, ~ 96% of them are home in under 24-hours. Best of all, less than 2% ever reach an animal shelter's doors because of the many ways PetHub helps the community return an animal to its family," shares PetHub founder, Tom Arnold.
PetHub not only aims to help community pets, but the community organizations that support pets – such as APA!. We are so grateful for their generosity, and are excited to share their mission with our APA! family.
We recently had the opportunity to chat with Lorien Clemens, the COO of PetHub. Enjoy our conversation below!
Lorien! Tell us about your furbabies!
We currently just have two fur babies: cats named Houdini (a 16-year-old female tabby) and Tormund Giantsbane (a VERY feisty 3-year-old ginger tabby male). My Boston Terrier of over 15 years recently passed away, and we miss her dearly. However, because we have a 10 month old baby HUMAN, we’ve decided to wait until he’s a bit older before we bring home a new dog (he LOVES doggies, and so do we!); but we hope to have a puppy in the near(ish) future.
What is the mission of PetHub? How does PetHub impact pets?
In early 2010, Tom Arnold left Microsoft to start PetHub. A new pet parent himself, he had discovered that managing a pet’s life was complicated and confusing, especially if your pet went missing – so he set out to build a “hub” to help modern pet parents, like himself, take better care of their beloved fur family members. Built on the vision of “Protect ~ Share ~ Nurture” PetHub has become the leader in modern pet identification – We’re better because...it’s more than just an ID tag.
How does this impact pets and organizations that help animals? Well, 96 percent of PetHub recovered pets are home in less than 24 hours and 98 percent of those pets never enter a shelter. This means lost animals protected with PetHub tags are usually home with family faster and without the added stress of a shelter stay. PetHub’s powerful system saves organizations' resources, time, and money, allowing them to focus those resources on other animal saving efforts. One client saw a savings of over $40,000 due to a decrease of lost pet intake in the first year of partnering with PetHub!
Why partner with APA!? How does the PetHub mission align with APA!’s?
We love APA’s mission of helping communities save more lives faster – it beautifully aligns with one of our core missions: Help lost pets get home faster. Another one of our core values is “Dig deep to find solutions," and we see that same approach in APA’s mission to help organizations discover the most effective strategies for helping pets. Through this partnership, we hope to bring even more pets the power of PetHub protection.
One of APA!’s goals is to innovate the animal sheltering industry to save more vulnerable lives. With PetHub also taking steps to innovate saving pets' lives and keeping them out of the shelter system, what would you like our audience to know about PetHub? What makes PetHub special?
Since we launched our first QR pet ID tag in late 2010, PetHub has been the industry leader in modern pet identification. We offer one of the most comprehensive, affordable lost pet recovery systems on the market today. With PetHub digital ID tags, pet parents can link unlimited information to their pet’s tag profile – pet parents actually want PetHub IDs, because, again, it’s more than just an ID tag.
Pet parents can purchase digital ID tag products from us directly, though more often they receive our tags through animal welfare organizations in one of the nearly 500 communities that use our tags for license, rabies or adoption tag programs. We work directly with organizations to build custom pet ID tag programs, tailored to meet the needs of the community. Using PetHub’s customizable, modern ID tags, coupled with our award-winning platform, organizations can enhance the value of existing adoption, license or rabies tag programs, and help save more pets’ lives.
Is there a particular success story that has come from your work that has really resonated with you?
One of the joys of my job (and every PetHub team members’ joys) is that we all get “found pet” alerts that come in through our 24/7 Found Pet Hotline. At least once a week, I’ll pour through the call logs and follow-up emails from pet parents whose fur babies are home safe thanks to their PetHub tags. One story that really stood out to me, as a testament to how powerful our system is, was a testimonial from a woman who had been on a family trip to Spain. At the airport before she left, she had used her mobile phone to update her dog’s pet profile so that her mother-in-law would be the first emergency contact while the family was out of the country, since he was staying with her in-laws. After her long trans-Atlantic flight, she finally got to the hotel and used wi-fi to check emails and messages, and found that in the 14 hours she’d been offline, her pup had escaped the yard, been found, and reported through our system. Her mother-in-law had been contacted and the pup was safe and sound, back in her in-laws’ home ... all before she had even landed in Spain! That sort of thing would have been impossible with an old-fashioned standard tag where the contact information is static and potentially useless while you are traveling.
