Hi all, it's been awhile since you've heard from me about my sweet foster boy, Mr. Z. I'm sure that you saw that he has become a bit of a superstar, receiving TV coverage from three local stations! It was my hope that perhaps the broadcasts would bring someone forward who might have witnessed this brutal attack. Mr. Z is, overall, doing very well. He still has one medium and one large area of third degree burns that has resisted treatment. And boy, do I mean treatment! Ice therapy, physical therapy, hydrotherapy and even laser therapy.
Mr. Z underwent surgery last to remove the "cherry eye", which is a painful injury that occurred when the flames licked up onto his eyes, snout and chin. That part of the surgery went well, but upon closer inspection of his belly and inside of his hind leg, it was clear the the loss of tissue and muscle was far greater than we had anticipated. As a result, there is a ton of scar tissue, which is pulling his back leg up and into his body. Even his 'pee pee" is fused to the inside of his leg, due to lack of skin to attach to.
Next week, Mr. Z will undergo major surgery, and will most likely have the leg amputated. He's only using three legs now and gets along just fine! He's loves being a superstar at the dog park! Some people know him by name. He's turning more and more into a cuddly little snuggle bunny.Mr. Z sure can give perspective to me when I'm feeling down about something. I just look over at him, tongue out, tail wagging, happy as can be, and the problem seems so ridiculously insignificant. We could all learn a few lessons from Mr. Z!
I ask that you all keep Mr. Z in your thoughts and prayers, as amputation on a hind leg is a lot more involved than if it were a front one. And his surgery will be very expensive, so any donation (choose Mr. Z in the donation pull down menu) will be greatly appreciated. He'll be on a lot of meds for at least a month.
