The Stitch Lab on S. 1st hosted a group of dog lovers, sewing enthusiasts and Austin Pets Alive! volunteers Monday night to make "Adopt Me!" vests for the dogs.
With lots orange material, green borders and white paint in-hand, our goal was to make 30 vests for the dogs to wear at special events, running around Lady Bird Lake and out on the town. Instead, we made 40!
"It's such a cool experience when people come together and contribute their talents to help others," APA! volunteer Crystal Corzine, who organized the vest-making night, said. "That's a big reason why I wanted to do these vests -- some people can write, some people can foster, and I can craft! And I wanted to do these vests for APA! because they're an organization that I have a lot of respect for and that is doing so many amazing things in our community."
With Stitch Lab Owner Leslie Bonnell as our ring leader, volunteers got a crash course in screen printing, working with bias tape and the importance of needle position as the vests came together.
"Of course, this whole project really took off when we brought Leslie into the mix," Crystal said. "A huge thanks goes to Leslie and the Stitch Lab for dedicating so much time and resources to bringing crafty people together to get some dogs adopted!"
Look for our bright orange vests around town! They'll be hard to miss...
