Last week, many kind and compassionate supporters rallied around three orphaned kittens in our care, Pumpkin, Puddin, and Pippen. After it was made clear that many individuals took a great interest in their story, we decided it best to share with our community an update on their current status, and share these orphans’ incredible story of strength and perseverance.
If you aren’t familiar with Pumpkin, Puddin, and Pippen’s narrative, it helps to understand how and why they came to us all the way from Luling, Texas. As we’ve noted time and time again, the animals in our care don’t have anywhere else to go. We are their last shot at getting a chance at life; because of this, we do, more often than not, care for animals who have endured some kind of traumatic experience. Not only had these babies suffered a traumatic experience, but it physically showed: each kitten had one ruptured eyeball. Since this is graphic content, we have linked a photo of the kittens before their surgery here. Due to the nature of the injuries, there is a high probability that this was an intentional act of cruelty.
Thankfully, a good samaritan found the kittens next to an abandoned building and got them to safety – right into the hands of a Luling Animal Shelter employee who was already planning on attending our Maddie’s® Neonatal Kitten Apprenticeship the following week. So from one superstar rescuer to the next, the kittens found themselves journeying to Austin to receive the care they so desperately needed.
Despite all of this, all the pain and suffering and traveling, these orphans maintained their playful, wild spirit. Our vets are thrilled to report that even post-surgery, they are as rambunctious as ever!
The surgery to remove their ruptured eyes was made a priority, therefore we were not able to fully estimate the time and care it would cost to care for the kittens post-surgery; while this will never stop us from providing these necessary and lifesaving surgeries to our animals, it’s during these times when we need you most. The support you generously give to us goes straight back to allowing us to perform everyday miracles. Your support will enable Pumpkin, Pudding, and Pippen to live happy, healthy, full lives.
Our vets are more than satisfied with the results of their surgeries. At the moment, these babies are healing in our cat ISO ward so that we can ensure their eyes mend properly and that they’re receiving all the nutrients a typical kitten would need plus a little more. As soon as their eyes are healed and they gain a bit more weight, they’ll be available for adoption.
