We got a call a couple of days ago from Ellen asking about the status of our current foster dog, Grace, and telling us about the lab mix and 12 pups that needed immediate rescue. Grace was formerly feral and still has quite a bit of socializing to do, we weren't really in the market for more fosters just yet

But Ellen was calling because we were the last option (she didn't say that - I just knew) so we said, sure, what's 13 more. Now we are the proud foster family of a momma lab mix and her 12 pups. Pup stats: 8 girls and 4 boys. 2 light blond, 3 golden, 1 brown, 2 Rotti mix, 4 black. All adorable. We are guessing they are almost 2 weeks old because most of their eyes are open and they are crawling around like champs. Not just belly sliding but walking around like drunken sailors. Supposedly, momma dog was refusing to feed them, but all but one are fat and happy. The one runt is still touch and go - but making good progress. She is a feisty little thing and we are happy to help her in her fight by giving her one on one nursing time with mom as often as possible. Mom is doing a good job of nursing and cleaning everyone. Sometimes we have to ask her to do it, but a lot of times we just go to check on her and find her doing it. She has a very tough job. 12 pups and 10 nipples - you do the math!
We are trying to think of a perfect name for Momma dog. The only name we have come up with for her right now is Delilah, after the sappy nighttime DJ on the easy listening station that we play in the puppy room all the time. It doesn't really fit her, so we'll be changing it. We just call her "Sweet Momma" right now anyway. If you have a suggestion for a name for her or the pups - shoot!
