Austin Pets Alive! uses catteries at four Austin area PetSmarts to house cats and give them daily exposure to the public in hopes of getting them adopted. You've probably seen them. Catteries are rooms on the sides of the stores with glass windows to look in and watch the kitties.
We usually have kittens in the catteries so they can be seen by the public while they are still young. We also have some cats in the catteries that have been with us for a long time so that more potential adopters will have the opportunity to visit with them.
Cats stay for three weeks then go home to foster care if they are not adopted in that time. Volunteers visit the catteries once a day (sometimes more often) to clean litter boxes, replenish food and water and give the cats time to play outside of their cages.
Some volunteers also take home cat beds and blankets to be washed and dried. However, with the recent addition of more catteries we have run out of extra cat beds to be used while the main beds are being washed.
You can help keep kitties warm by donating cat beds or funds to buy more cat beds.
We need beds that are machine washable (without foam inside) and are the size for one kitty (we don't have room for very big cat beds).
If you'd rather stay at home on the computer you can also donate here and we'll buy the beds for you. We're hoping to have 50 more beds to have all our current (and hopefully future) catteries well stocked.
Oh, and if you're looking for a new addition to your family come by and visit any of out catteries and meet wonderful cats like Melvin, Josh, Angel Wings, Leah, Tiger and more!
