In the midst of our world’s current health pandemic, something incredible is happening. If you’ve stepped foot outside anytime within the past month, you may have found yourself asking this question: Have there always been this many dogs in my neighborhood?
While we can’t speak on behalf of the rest of the country, Austinites are taking advantage of one of the few outdoor activities we are able to safely partake in: walking Fido. And it’s not just at peak dog-walking times anymore. People are able to take their pup on a walk at 8 AM, 2 PM, 10 PM, and all the other times outside and in between.
As Spider Man’s Uncle Ben taught us, though, with great power comes great responsibility. So don’t forget to gear up before your walks so that you’re prepared to scoop the poop!
While scrambling at the grocery store, trying to touch as little as possible while also grabbing the essentials and anxiously hoping that there’s still toilet paper left, it can be easy to forget to grab another pack of doggy waste bags. Thankfully, there are a few online services that make this essential duty easier! Both Chewy.com and Amazon offer autoship/subscription options (and, if you go to smile.amazon.com, you can set APA! as your charity of choice, which will give a portion of your purchase back to us!), and local pet shops such as Tomlinson’s have switched to curbside/delivery models.
While scooping the poop may not seem important, and at times pretty gross, it is crucial to the health and safety of our community. Just to put things into perspective, there are over 250,000 dogs in Austin, which in turn creates 150,000 pounds of poop per day. And now, more than ever before, we each have an obligation to care for, and look after, the health and safety of our neighbors and fellow Austinites.
Austin is not only one of the fastest growing cities in America, but one of the fastest growing pet communities. Thankfully, if we all continue to give a crap, we’ll continue to be a dog lover’s haven for years to come!
