AUSTIN, TX – January 27, 2020 – Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) has received a $45,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to help prepare more shelter pets in Central Texas for adoption and ensure they are ready to find loving homes. With the help of this grant, the organization will offer cat adoptions and host foster adoption events at its offsite catteries to support its efforts to help homeless pets find homes.
Austin Pets Alive! provides a vital safety net for at-risk homeless pets in Central Texas, giving dogs and cats in need of specialized care the love, time and treatment they need to find loving homes. At APA!’s offsite catteries—including one located at the PetSmart® Mueller store—people are able to meet and fall in love with cats and kittens that have beaten illnesses, healed from injuries, or survived as tiny, unweaned orphans, thanks to the care received at APA!. The grant funds will be used for adoption staff to assist visitors and process adoptions at APA!’s offsite catteries, as well as spay/neuter, vaccines and basic wellness care to prepare cats of all ages for adoption.
“This grant allows us to continue saving the lives that need us most,” Kristen Hansen, Cat Program Manager, said. “By having offsite adoption centers at PetSmart stores around Austin, we can save even more lives than we could with our normal shelter capacity, giving even more cats the chances at life they deserve.”
“Austin Pets Alive! continues to serve as a valuable resource for the Austin pet community, and we are thrilled to support this initiative that will help find homes for pets in need. It is our hope this funding will help promote a healthier pet population while reducing the number of homeless cats in the area, ” said Heidi Fulcher, associate relationship manager at PetSmart Charities.
Since 1994, through its partnership with nearly 4,000 humane societies, SPCAs and pet rescues across North America, PetSmart Charities has helped more than 9 million pets to find loving homes via its in-store adoption program in over 1,650 PetSmart stores. The leading funder of animal welfare has also donated nearly $400 million to positively impact communities, to help preserve families, to improve access to veterinary care and to connect people and pets through initiatives like this with Austin Pets Alive!.
Those interested in adopting a cat from APA! can learn more at www.austinpetsalive.org. They also can visit cats at APA! or at the 51st Street PetSmart; including over the PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend from February 28 to March 1.
“An added benefit of these offsite catteries is that it gives APA! a way to connect directly with the community outside of the downtown area,” Hansen added. “Plus, these are quieter spaces for cats (and adopters!) who might need a little bit less noise and chaos than you find in traditional shelter environments.”
