Project Overview

Our transport team will help 300 more cats and dogs reach safety before the end of the year — bringing them from overcrowded, under-funded Texas shelters where their lives are at risk, to communities where adopters and fosters are waiting with open arms.

APA!’s Transport Program brings people and pets together regardless of the miles. This program was born out of the 2021 Winter Storm Uri, a snow event that adversely impacted Texas shelters and put many pets’ lives at risk. We set a goal to save 1,000 lives that winter by connecting under-resourced Texas shelters with out-of-state No Kill shelters and rescue organizations. When we hit our goal in four weeks — when an adorable cat named Charlie was placed in a loving home — we knew we couldn’t stop there.

Today the APA! Transport Program has helped save thousands of lives and we’re determined to save thousands more each year. We do this by providing the resources, vet time, health certificates, vaccinations, and transport coordination required to move shelter pets out of Texas. Some pets travel to their new homes by plane and others in one of our transport vans. Where once they faced almost certain death, due to no fault of their own, now a beautiful future in a loving home is theirs to enjoy. By the end of 2023 alone, 2,500 pets’ lives will have been saved by our Transport Program. More than 6,000 cats and dogs have been saved by the program since it began in 2021.
