Austin Pets Alive! Asks For Help to Make Space for Dogs From Louisiana
September 7, 2016 (Austin, TX): Austin Pets Alive! is reaching out to the Austin community with an urgent need for adopters and long-term fosters for animals displaced due to flooding in Louisiana.
“APA! has been asked to take in approximately 25 dogs permanently displaced by flooding in Louisiana,” said Mike Kaviani, APA!’s Director of Lifesaving Operations. “We really want to help these animals, but can’t do so at the expense of our own community’s dogs and cats.” Kaviani said that in order for APA! to help, it needs to find homes (adoption or long-term foster) for approximately 25 dogs until they are adopted. “We also need to raise $12,500 (about $500 per dog) to cover the medical and care expenses,” said Kaviani. “And, we’ll need volunteers to help transport the animals from Louisiana to Austin – fortunately the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS.org) has offered to cover the transport fees.”
“The devastation in Louisiana is so heartbreaking, and we really want to be able to take in these animals so that the tragedy isn’t compounded by them losing their lives.” said Dr. Ellen Jefferson, APA!’s Executive Director. “Our lifesaving mission is here locally but we can’t turn our back on animals that are facing a natural disaster. If this happened in Austin, we would need and want the help of the rest of the country to recover.”
If you’d like to volunteer to help with the transportation of these 25 dogs from Louisiana to Austin, please fill out this form.
