It's raining kittens in Austin - kitten season is officially here. We're throwing them a virtual baby shower here and there's lots of ways that you can help.
Last year, about 1,600 kittens were brought to Town Lake Animal Center and most were euthanized. Our goal is to save at least 500 of them this year. We still need foster homes (all it takes is a spare bathroom and some TLC) and we also need resources.
We'll even provide training to people who can bottle feed unweaned kittens (just send an email to[email protected]).
Young, orphaned kittens need constant warm temperatures because they don't have their mothers to keep them warm and they are unable to regulate their body temperatures themselves. A draft can cause death. Heating pads can burn very young kittens because they are not strong enough to move away. Incubators warm the air so they stay warm without getting burned. We need 20 more incubators, which cost $425 each. Click here to donate and chip in to help us buy more incubators.
Kittens need to grow every day. Because they are so small, it is difficult to tell if they are growing or losing weight before it is too late. An accurate digital scale saves many kittens because it allows the bottle baby foster to weigh them accurately daily. We need 50 more scales, at $40 each.
