We are thrilled to share that last night City Council passed the motion to allow our extended use of the Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC) facility 7-0. The motion directs us to work directly with city staff to negotiate an agreement that will allow us to house our full operations at TLAC, and then Council will vote on our agreement at the next City Council meeting on May 24. We had a lot of Austin Pets Alive! supporters in the crowd that waiting almost four hours to get to our agenda item, and we feel so fortunate to have such amazing volunteers and staff.
As we are due out of our Manchaca facility by May 31, this will be a very tight logistical squeeze, and we will be needing your support to move our animals and equipment quickly between May 24 and May 31 after we do get the contract finalized. There is also a possibility of Council calling a special session prior to May 24 if we are able to come to an agreement with city staff that would allow for expediting our full move into TLAC. We may need your support in person as a group again at the next City Council meeting if we run into negotiation pitfalls.
We'd like to extend a special thanks to all of our supporters and to City Council, especially Council Members Mike Martinez and Laura Morrison, for their continued support of no-kill and in helping us continue to help Austin be a no-kill city. Council Member Mike's amendment to allow for a possible multi-year agreement is truly outstanding and shows that he really understands the issue and our needs as a supporting partner of Austin Animal Center. Stay tuned for more details about how you can help in the next month!
