"I keep thinking about what made me respond to Lola's posting. To be honest, I'm not really sure. I have always been a huge animal lover - especially dogs, but also cats, horses and pretty much anything with four legs. :) When I moved to Austin about three years ago my absolute favorite thing about the city was that, unlike the college town I grew up in, pets were expected and quite welcome here. I first learned about APA! one day when your staff and several adorable dogs were outside of Petsmart. I really, truly love APA!'s mission and I believe it's completely achievable. Since then, I give cash when I can or at least try to drop off a bag of dog food and say "Hi," to the dogs when I see them. I'm also a fan of APA! on Facebook and I regularly read the updates.
About two months ago, my husband and I purchased a home. We discussed getting another dog, but decided that perhaps fostering was a better plan to see how Tessie (our tiny, slightly neurotic, runt of the litter Scottish Terrier) handles having another pet in our home. When I saw APA!'s posting about Lola and her pups on Craigslist, I knew it was time to quit thinking about it and actually do something. To be perfectly honest, I was a little hesitant because she is a Pit Bull and unfortunately they have an awful reputation, but I had nothing to worry about. She's a doll. I'm glad I didn't let unfounded fear stop me from volunteering to foster her. She is a sweet and loving dog. I can't express how great it felt to see her rolling around on her back in the grass in my backyard, "smiling" and looking for belly rubs on her first day at our house. MUCH better than the alternative...
More about Lola... She was pretty nonchalant about her pups. She fed them and took care of them, but she was pretty mellow about them. It's fun to watch her play with them in the backyard now that they're getting bigger. She's almost like a puppy when she does that!
She knows how to use a dog door, despite that ours isn't really her size. Somehow, she manages to fit through! ;)
Lola LOVES to be outside (as long as it's not raining - she hates the rain). She welcomes any opportunity to just follow us around the house and lay by our feet. She's friendly to everyone she has encountered and ADORES going for car rides.
She's a very good dog - much better than I EVER expected when I agreed to foster her. Unfortunately, she looks a little intimidating at first glance, but looks are deceiving. She's smart, loving, friendly and has a great 'smile.' ;)
Although we don't have any children, she's also good with my learning disabled/mildly special education adult sister as well. The two hang out together in the back yard quite often."
