A 2-year-old Austin Pets Alive! dog named Anna needs surgery on her heart.
Anna is a playful, happy dog born with a congenital heart defect known as Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PHD). This condition is usually diagnosed at birth and two-thirds of untreated cases result in death before the dog reaches one-year-old. Dogs with PHD are very rarely seen in a shelter setting, so for Anna to live to be 2-years-old and end up in the care of a rescue organization like Austin Pets Alive! is highly unusual. She is stable and doing well right now but if she were to get sick it would be very quickly and without warning. If it does get to that point, it would be hard to bring her back to health. Without an owner, your contributions are her best chance of getting heart surgery and surviving.
Once fully recovered, Anna will return to being a playful dog with the spirit of a puppy and a bright outlook on life.
Austin Pets Alive! is asking the community to step up and help raise funds to save Anna's life. Every day, APA! rescues about 15 dogs and cats who would otherwise be killed.
