On Thursday we received preliminary results back on Bonnie's biopsies and the prognosis does not sound good. She appears to have a type of fungal infection that is extremely rare and usually fatal in dogs. We are waiting to discuss with the top expert in the field in this type of disease to see if there are treatments that can be done and how hard they will be on her. We very much want to give this sweet girl a chance and are continuing to pray for good news.
In the meantime, she is managing to consume around eight jars of meat-flavored baby food a day (her favorite seems to be chicken!) and she really enjoys eating, car rides and going for walks. She is a very patient and loving girl who just wants to be around people and do normal dog-things. Her digestive system finally seems to be straightening out a bit (she's keeping most of the food down and seems to be processing it well.) We're hoping she's putting on a little weight, although it's slow progress as we don't want to feed her too much at one time for fear she will get sick. When we rescued her she was around 33 pounds. (The average Dogue de Bordeaux seems to be at least double that size...we recently saw a male that was 120 lbs!) We'll try to weigh her soon and report on her progress.
Thank you to everyone who's supported and cared for this girl! If you'd like to make a contribution toward her continuing medical care (and upcoming treatments to fight her infection), please click on the Donate to APA! link or send an email to: donateATaustinpetsaliveDOTorg.
