Whether it’s that last breath of fresh air and tuck-in at the end of the night, or the first morning potty break and playtime, the dogs which stay overnight at the APA headquarters depend on the Love-on-a-Leash team (or “LOL team”) volunteers for regular interaction, socialization, and of course, basic sanitary needs (yes, this means poop duty!). We’re there for the dogs every day, morning and night. And we are always looking for new volunteers to join us!
Want to feel like you’ve accomplished something special early in the day? Come join us for a morning shift. Our dogs can barely contain their excitement to see their first person after spending all night at the building. Sprinting outside with some of the dogs on that morning shift is great exercise! Volunteering on any morning shift might also include participating in APA’s organized playgroups or loving on our precious puppies.
If the early morning rise doesn’t tempt you then try an evening walking shift. Tire out an energetic dog by tossing a ball around or playing in our agility yard. Sit and smell the evening breezes with some of our more mellow canines. Make sure they have comfy bedding and water, provide bedtime kisses and hugs, and they’re ready to turn in for the night.
By joining the LOL team, you are making a difference in all of our dogs’ lives. Every interaction with a new person contributes to each dog’s social skills and enhances adoptability. Even those few minutes a day you spend walking a dog helps.
Interested in learning more? The LOL team has 2 daily shifts: 7-9 am and 8-10 pm. For more information, please contact us at [email protected]. Or, show up at the main building during a shift and ask to speak to the shift lead to begin helping out.
